It isn’t racism, it is vision

Now that we’re on to South Carolina, everything has to have a race angle. No, check that. It has to have the “black vote” angle. Since this is the first biggie with more than the 4-5 black people who live in New Hampshire and the maybe two dozen who live in Iowa. True Story.
Anyway, Clinton is under attack for
her comments last week that seemed to suggest that President Lyndon B. Johnson should get more credit for passage of major civil rights legislation rather than King.
She’s trying to backtrack, of course, because it doesn’t look very good. So what’s going on?
From CBS News:
And the candidate herself, in an interview with Fox News, stressed the role of President Lyndon Johnson, over Martin Luther King Jr., in the civil rights movement.
“I would point to the fact that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done,” she said, in response to a question about how her dismissive attitude toward Obama’s “false hopes” would have applied to the civil rights movement. “That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in peoples lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it, and actually got it accomplished.”
From The State:
Clinton expanded on her comments during a Jan. 8 interview on NBC’s “Today” show.
“Sen. Obama used President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to criticize me,” she said. “Basically compared himself to two of our greatest heroes. He basically said that President Kennedy and Dr. King had made great speeches and that speeches were important. Well, no one denies that. But if all there is (is) a speech, then it doesn’t change anything.”
Naturally the boneheads are going all nonlinear on the race angle. “Ooooh, Hillary’s a racist”, they charge. Even Clinton I is getting dinged for saying Obama is a “fairy tale”. Good God. Now Bill’s a racist? Will you people say any stupid shit at all? Dude, the only thing racist appearing about Bill was his proclivity for getting into trouble with “unattractive to moderately attractive white women” instead of all moderately attractive women!
Here’s the thing though. There is something fucking important in here that is going to be steamrolled over. Hillary spoke the truth. She really does believe that wonkish policy and political expertise is much more important in a President than is the power to inspire, roar from the bully pulpit and, yes, demagogue.
I disagree. So does most of America. That’s why Carter got hammered by Reagan, why Mondale was a non-starter and why Gore and Kerry, who should have wiped the mat with that little snotrag, turned it into losable races.
